Tomato Thokku /Tomato Chutney – Easy Side Dish For Appam/Idli/Dosa

Tomato thokku is a tangy and yummy side dish which goes well with idli, dosa, appam, and even roti. It is made with minimum ingredients and is loaded with rich flavour and godness of tamoato.  You just need some fresh ripe tomatoes, basic spices and a yummy tadka to gulp down countless appam. Tomato thokku and vegetable appam is a match made in heaven.  Here is the quick recipe.

Tomato Thokku /Tomato Chutney – Easy Side Dish For Appam/Idli/Dosa

Ingredients

  • Ripe Tomato – 5-6 nos, roughly chopped. Each tomato cut into 4-6 slices.
  • Garlic – 6-10 nos
  • Curry Leaves – 4-5 leaves
  • Chilli Powder – 1 spoon
  • Turmeric Powder – 1/4 teaspoons
  • Mustard seeds – 1 spoon
  • Gingelly Oil – 1 tablespoon
  • Salt – To taste

Method to Prepare

  1. Take a pressure cooker, add 1/4 cup of water, add the chopped tomatoes, turmeric powder, and salt. Pressure cook it for 2-3 high whistles.
  2. Turn off the flame, the tomatoes should turn mushy, add the required amount of chili powder and cook the mix for another 4-5 minutes in medium flame. This step is necessary to remove the raw smell of the spices. Don’t cover the tomato mix.
  3. If you feel the thokku is too watery, close the cooker without putting the whistle and cook the tomato mix for another 2-3 minutes in high flame. The excess water will evaporate.
  4. Take a pan, add gingelly oil and add mustard seeds. Allow it to splutter and add garlic pods, let it get cooked well for 2-3 minutes. The garlic should turn golden brown in color. Add the curry leaves and turn off the flame.
  5. Add this tadka to the cooked tomato thokku.
  6. The tomato thokku is ready to be gulped down with hot vegetable appam

Tips
1. Choose ripe and red tomatoes to get the tangy flavor.
2. You can skip the garlic tadka and replace it with regular mustard oil tadka. But, garlic gives a nice aroma to the final dish.
